Nature rewarded me for getting up and out early on frosty December mornings in Williamsburg, Virginia. Colonial Parkway winds along the James River, offering many opportunities for some breathtaking sunrise photography.

A classic 1955 Dodge, with a Howe fire truck body, on display in historic Yorktown, Virginia.
This truck was originally placed in service by the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety. Through a community-wide effort called Project 55, this truck was lovingly restored and continues to proudly serve the department and the county's citizens.
I made this image by combining photographs varying in exposure by five f/stops, using a process call High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. This permitted me to retain detail throughout the lightest to darkest tones in the scene. This range of tones far exceeds what can be captured in a single image, but our eyes and brain work together to allow us to see deep into shadows and appreciate the highlights. The truck sported a rich, deep paint job. I used Topaz Adjust to accentuate accentuate the red, giving it a three dimensional feel in this two dimensional photographic representation.

A few days after Christmas, 2010, a snow blanketed the Outer Banks, followed by brilliant sunshine. While it did not last long, it was a magical morning in an area that seldom gets snow. One of our artistic treasures, the abandoned C. W. Wright Store in Jarvisburg, NC was briefly transformed by its new gleaming white coat.

Photographs of dramatic skies generally look better when there is an interesting element in the foreground. Silhouetted bare trees from late autumn and winter are classic examples of such compositional elements.
These three images were made on cold October mornings, before sunrise, in Big Meadow in Shenandoah National Park.
The images are available as prints, gifts, and for instant downloads. Simply click an image for more information.

A Christmas tree atop Jockey's Ridge, the tallest sand dune in the eastern United States, is reflected in a rainwater pond on the dune.
