Free Photowalk, Historic Manteo NC Waterfront PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:01

Join me Saturday, October 1, 2011, on free photo walk in historic downtown Manteo waterfront on North Carolina's Outer Banks.  The event is part of the Scott Kelby WorldWide Photo Walk, with more than 900 scheduled walks, and 17,000 participating registered photographers, so far.

The idea is to gather with like minded photographers, explore the boardwalk-lined waterfront and surrounding area of historic seafaring Manteo.  The town features a wonderful mix of old and new, aesthetically-blended docks, shops, cafes, picket fences, and parks, all lining narrow old-town streets. The centerpieces are Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse – right on the docks, and a recreation of the Elizabeth II, the ship which brought the first English settlers to the New World. There are unlimited photo opportunities within just a few blocks, and there are no hills, making this a wonderful photo walk opportunity.  Afterwards, we'll gather for coffee and breakfast, sharing photos and stories.  If you wish, you can participate in a competition with images made during the event, with cool Scott Kelby prizes up for grabs at the local and worldwide level.

We'll start at 6:15am, Saturday, October 1.  Sunrise is at 6:57, so we'll have ample opportunities in the pre-dawn light, and then with the low light just after sunrise.

The event is free, open to photographers of all levels, but limited to the first 50 people that register.  Registration is required.  To register, and for more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/wwpw-manteo.

The same day, my friend and exceptional photographer, Matt Gibson, is also leading a free photo walk.  Matt's walk in Corolla, preceded by a cook out at his Nags Head gallery.  We are attending each other's walks, and encouraging participants to make a full day of it here on the Outer Banks by signing up for both walks!  Register for Matt's here:  http://tinyurl.com/wwpw-corolla.

Sunday, 21 March 2010 08:15

Photographer Dan Beauvais will be doing a live demonstration of Photoshop Layers and Masks Monday evening, March 22, 2010 for Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association - Outer Banks Region.  The program starts at 6pm, and is at the Dare County Library, 400 Mustian Street, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.  The meeting room entrance is at the back left corner of the building.  Members and guests are welcome.

The demonstration will use four practical examples of enhancing images by using layers and masks. Among the topics covered will be flexibility, isolation, transparency, combining elements from multiple images, transformation, blending modes, opacity, localizing global effects, selective sharpening and noise reduction, using photos to select their own elements, and the relationship between selections, channels, and masks.

Attendees will receive a CD-ROM with all the presentation materials and sample photos.

Oshkosh Airshow, so far PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Thursday, 30 July 2009 01:06
Having a great time at EAA AirVenture Airshow in Oshkosh, WI.  After initial culling, I've kept 5853 photos so far.  Although the show has only completed three days, I've been on the airfield for five, three of which were shortened by rain.  I am sharing the trip with my good friend, Brian King.  We are tenting on the airfield, but have a sweet set-up with a screenhouse for our editing office each evening.  We are using a power inverter connected to my truck battery to provide AC power for laptops, charging batteries, and economical but bright compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Photos soon, but meanwhile, see my Aviation Gallery for images from various airshows.
